Surprise clouds of steam

We had another night disrupted by the noise of rain, it’s surprising how annoying a repetitive drip can be. We got going quite early and revised our plans, travelling to Brienz instead of Lucerne.

We took the St Gotthard pass which has some impressive tunnels but is basically a motorway through the clouds, then we turned off onto the Susten pass. This is a more traditional winding mountain pass. We quickly climbed above the clouds and had fabulous views of the mountains and glaciers. The driving was quite easy considering the height gain.

At the end of the pass we drove through Meringen ( where meringues come from) and arrived at Brienz in time to take the Brienz Rothorn Bahn. This is a steam powered rack railway which we saw last year but missed going on. Ticket prices are steep and so is the track, it climbs to 2350m in about 7km. The engines work hard. There is a fabulous view from the to with mountains in all directions, not all covered by cloud at the same time. We’re writing this from the top , with plans to stop at Interlaken tonight.
